Hotels in Cardiff city centre

November 7th, 2009

There’s always been something special about staying right in the heart of a major city no matter where in the world it is. I have always thought that you really only get a feel for a place once you have been right in the middle of things and thats why i wanted to do a list of a few of my favourite hotels in Cardiff city centre. One thing that i have mentioned before on this blog (and probably will do again) is to work out what your exact requirements are. This may sound overly complex to some people but it really is true and can save you alot of money when it comes to booking. For instance someone booking a romantic break away has vastly different requirements than your average stag party! For example many hotels have some great extra facilities such as modern gyms and saunas however if you plan to spend most of your time out in the city (i usually do) then there’s really no point to these little extras. The same goes for having an in house restaurant or bar in the hotel, i know for some its nice to be able to come back to the hotel for a drink after a busy day in the city but most people i know want to head straight out into the city centre as soon as they can!

What are the main benefits of a hotel in the city centre i hear you ask? Well i suppose the main factor is that you rarely have far to travel to reach many of the main tourist destinations and attractions such as St David’s Shopping centre or the Millennium Stadium. People often underestimate how much taxi’s and other forms of transport can cost in and around Cardiff and it can all add up.

So with all that being said i will introduce you to a short list of some great hotels right in the middle of Cardiff city. Hopefully this will give you an idea of what kind of accommodation is available and ill try to find something to fit everyone’s budget whether they are looking for a discount hotel or some 5 star luxury!

  • Parc Hotel, Thistle is a 4 star hotel bang in the centre of town and has all mod cons like full Wifi coverage and air conditioning that you would expect from a modern 4 star hotel in the middle of a popular city. The hotel also has a great in-house restaurant and bar which im sure many people will want to take advantage of and also 24 hour room service which could come in handy. A double standard will range between £99 and £120 depending on when you book.
  • Mercure Holland House Hotel & Spa is another 4 star hotel also in the centre of the action! Its quite a large hotel with over 150 rooms and it has great access to alot of tourist favourites like the Millennium Stadium so it is often a hit with football and rugby fans. They also have on site car parking which i can tell you is rare for a city centre hotel. They have a wide selection of rooms going from £85 all the way to £135 per night.
  • Park Plaza Cardiff has the honour of being named AA hotel of the year for Wales in 2007 which is quite impressive. However always remember to look at any hotel choice as a whole when deciding where to book. This is a also a 4 star hotel and has some impressive leisure facilities such as a pool, spa and specialist treatment rooms. Again remember these leisure extras really only make sense if you plan on using them, otherwise it really is a waste of money.
  • Cardiff Sandringham Hotel is a 2 star hotel and i don’t usually review them on this blog, however i did want to offer the option of something alot cheaper in this post as everything up to now has been 4 star. The main plus with this hotel is its location as it is right on Mary street in central Cardiff. Rooms will be around £40 - £50 for a standard double with i think is good value for a budget hotel in this location.

So there you have it 4 good hotels right in the middle of the capital of Wales, what more could you ask for! By the way i saw this cool video of Cardiff below on Youtube so take a look.
